AFCCT Team up with Fugro to support STEM Football and Education programme

The world’s leading Geo-data specialist, Fugro, are sponsoring Aberdeen Football Club Community Trust’s (AFCCT) STEM Football and Education programme, which uses robotics to develop technical skills in young people.

After a successful 18-month trial, and with funding support from Fugro, the programme will be delivered in 6 schools across Aberdeen City and Shire from January 2023. Designated AFCCT staff members will work in partner primary schools to enhance pupils’ knowledge of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The programme focuses on STEM activities and gives children the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of these subjects through varied activities including how to program, develop codes, and understand technological devices. The key element of the project is the use of Sphero robots, which are used to educate young people on basic coding and programming as well as developing problem solving skills through a robotic football themed game.

As part of the launch, AFCCT and Fugro team members visited Hazlehead Primary School; the first school to receive the programme in the New Year.

“Learning with AFC is a great way to support the delivery of STEM, our children love this and found it highly engaging, challenging and fun.”

Barbara Jones, Hazlehead Primary Head Teacher

“We understand the importance of community engagement in developing talent, helping children learn new skills, and interacting with a diverse group of people, so when the opportunity to get involved with AFC Community Trust came up it was an obvious fit for us.

We’re proud to be working together on their STEM initiatives and supporting the club as it strives to change lives for the better. Together we can help future generations prepare for tomorrow.”

Gordon Kennedy, Fugro’s Regional Business Line Director Marine Asset Integrity Europe and Africa

“Following a successful pilot of the STEM programme over the last 18 months we could see the desire for schools to have access to this type of learning. By using the Sphero robots as well as having football as an underlying theme it allows us to show that STEM learning is for everyone.”
