STEM EDUCATION AND FOOTBALL – JOIN OUR NEW EUROPEAN NETWORK
The importance of STEM education is increasing continuously. Football can be used as a tool to promote STEM education among children and youth.
WHAT IS STEM EDUCATION?
The abbreviation STEM stands for Science, Technology, Education, and Maths. The goal of STEM programmes is to educate pupils in the four disciplines by using an interdisciplinary and applied approach.
WHY IS STEM EDUCATION IMPORTANT?
Demand for STEM jobs increased three times between 2000 and 2010, and continues to grow, with many new fields and professions emerging each day. With advances in artificial intelligence, millions of jobs are now vacant. So clearly, STEM is the key to the careers of the future and it needs many more participants. In the next decade, 80% of jobs will require STEM skills.
HOW CAN FOOTBALL CLUBS, LEAGUES AND FA’S COMBINE FOOTBALL AND STEM?
For EFDN members Chelsea FC and Feyenoord Rotterdam programmes featuring STEM education are already an integral element within their broad offer of community programmes. Chelsea FC launched the worlds first Robot Football coding game using a Sphero robot, as well as delivery design and engineering programmes focused on Nike football boot design and stadium design. Chelsea FC and Feyenoord Rotterdam met with the San Francisco 49ers to exchange knowledge and experiences on STEM and sport.

As EFDN, we have a reach to communities and minds second to none. Together, we can learn, share and development programmes to motivate and inspire the next generation to engage in STEM education from a young age and use football to bring STEM to life.
The EFDN STEM Network wishes to engage EFDN members who are keen to start their own journey of STEM Education for their club and community and want to be part of an alliance that will drive change and impact across lives Europe.
